Sri Lanka schedules 5-hour power cut for May 13-14

ECONOMYNEXT – Power cuts up to 5 hours have been approved in Sri Lanka for May 13 and 14, Public Utilities Commission (PUCSL) Chairman Janaka Ratnayake said as money printing by the central bank triggered forex shortages have disrupted fuel imports.

All areas (ABCDEFGHIJKLPQRSTUVW) will have power cuts of 3 hours and 20 minute from 8.00 am to 3.10 pm and 1 hour and 40 minutes from 6.00 pm and 9.50 pm.

Between 6.00 am and 9.00 am, the Colombo City centre could face a power cut of three hours.

Board of Investments, Industrial zones coming under MNOXY and Z areas will have a power cut of three hours from 5.00 am and 8.00 am.

The state-run Ceylon Electricity Board said the supply interruption time and restoration time will be varied within 30 minutes as indicated above.

With curfew lifted for seven hours on Thursday (12), the PUCSL announced that the power cuts will be extended for 5 hours from earlier 3 hours and 20 minutes with the electricity demand increasing.

Due to shortage of dollars, the state-run fuel retailer Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) has been unable to deliver fuel on Monday and Tuesday. However, it later announced that fuel will be delivered for essential places under security.  (Colombo/ May 12/2022)
