Sri Lanka speaker asks President to recall Parliament: report
ECONONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka Speaker Mahinda Abeywardene has asked President Gotabya Rajapaksa to recall parliament, a media report said as political crisis erupted following overnight violence and the resignation of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa.
Parliament was scheduled to meet on May 17.
The business committee meeting which also includes party leaders is scheduled to Wednesday, a parliamentary official said.
Sri Lanka is under curfew till Wednesday morning after mob violence against properties of ruling party officials overnight after loyalists of Mahinda Rajapaksa attacked peaceful protestor in Colombo.
Sri Lanka’s President Gotabaya Rajapaksa is also due to meet party leaders today in a zoom meeting to decide on a future course of action. (Colombo/May10/2022)
