ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka Education Ministry has decided to close schools in Colombo and major cities in the country due to the transport related issues that arise with severe fuel shortage in the country.
Sri Lanka’s fuel shortage has increased with longer queues and people violently clashing with police against discrepancies in distribution.
The Ministry said schools in the Colombo region and major cities in the country will be closed for a period of one week from Monday June 20.
The Ministry, however, permitted to conduct online sessions.
However, the permission has been given to the provincial and district officers to take decisions regarding the schools in rural and other areas where there are no transportation issues.
Meanwhile the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka’s largest state-run university was closed until further notice due to the current crisis.
“Due to current difficulties faced, all academic programmes including examinations will be temporary discontinued and all hostels will be closed immediately,” M.D. Lamawansa, the Vice Chancellor of University of Peradeniya said in a notice.
“There fore, it is hereby informed that all students should leave the university premises with immediate effect.” (Colombo/ June 18/2022)
