Sri Lanka speaker to meet party leaders Monday, cabinet meeting tonight
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s Parliamentary speaker called a party leaders meeting Monday to discuss a debate on no confidence motion, after opposition members vociferously opposed an attempt by police to disperse a protestors outside parliament.
“I have called for a report on the incident from the police chief,” Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardene said after sitting resumed following a 10 minute recess to calm the house.
He said a party leaders meeting will be called on Monday to discuss when to take up a no confidence meeting.
The government has also called an emergency cabinet meeting Friday evening official sources said.
The meeting is expected to discuss current events, sources said, though no official agenda was given.
Sri Lanka’s weekly cabinet meetings are usually held on Tuesday night. (Colombo/May06/2022)
