ECONOMYNEXT – Power cuts up to 3 hours and 20 minutes have been approved for Sri Lanka for May 6, Public Utilities Commission Chairman Janaka Ratnayake said as money printing by the central bank triggered forex shortages, disrupting fuel imports.

All areas (ABCDEFGHIJKLPQRSTUVW) will have power cuts of 2 hours from 0900am to 0500pm and 1 hour and 20 minutes from 0500pm and 0900pm.

Between 0600am and 0900am, the Colombo City centre could face a power cut of three hours.

CEB said the supply interruption time and restoration time will be varied within 30 minutes as indicated above.

The same schedule will apply for May 07 and May 08.

Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekara told parliament on Thursday (05) that, with the Norochcholai power plant being forced to be shut down due to a breakdown, the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) has to manage the available diesel stock between power generation and daily consumption.

Therefore, it was decided to allocate the majority of the diesel supply to power generation to keep the power cuts at a minimum level of three hours and 20 minutes per day., he said (Colombo/May052022)
