Sri Lanka ruling party legislator dies in shooting, scores injured

ECONOMYNEXT – At least one person has died and scores were injured after ruling party activists loyal to resigned Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa clashed with protestor in Colombo triggering violence and a nation-wide curfew was clamped down.

Amarakeerthi Athukorala, ruling party lawmaker reportedly died in Nittambuwa, after his sports utility was blocked by protestors.

Report said at least 5,000 protestors had surrounded his vehicle and he had shot his way out injuring several persons and climbed on to a building.

He was later found dead.

Police said the circumstances of the incidence was not clear.

Main roads were blocked in several locations as protestors waited for supporters of Mahinda Rajapaksa who had attacked Gota Go Home Gama the main site the peaceful protestors in Colombo.

Several buses carrying Rajapaksa loyalists were attacked by mobs in several locations in Colombo.

Near the Prime Minister’s official residence Temple Trees protestors dunked his supporters in the nearby Beira Lake.

Some were also attacked by protestors, eye witness reports said. (Colombo/May09/2022)
