ECONOMYNEXT – Senior Sri Lanka police officer Deshabandu Tennakoon was assaulted by a small group of protestors in Colombo Tuesday (10) afternoon, footage that’s gone viral on social media showed.

An angry crowd was seen accosting Senior Deputy Inspector General (SDIG) Tennakoon on Perahera Mawatha, near Colombo’s Beire Lake, demanding to know who had ordered an assault on peaceful anti-government protestors Monday (09) morning.

Tennakoon’s response was inaudible, but the attackers promptly attacked him with their fists, a club and motorcycle helmets, sending the top cop fleeing.

Media reports said the police officer, who is in charge of the Western province, was rescued and later admitted to hospital with minor injuries.

Pictures had surfaced of Tennakoon together with government MP Sanath Nishantha allegedly at two protest sites that came under a brutal and unprovoked attack by supporters of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Violence erupted across Sri Lanka in the aftermath of Monday’s attack, leaving eight dead and over 230 injured.

The privately owned NewsFirst reported Tuesday afternoon that Tennakoon was among those whom a group of lawyers had claimed were involved in the attack on the protest sites. (Colombo/May10/2022)
