Sri Lanka Ports Authority directed to bear damages to Galle Face by protestors: minsiter

ECONOMYNEXT – The Sri Lanka Port Authority (SLPA) has been directed to bear the damages caused to the Galle Face Green promenade by Sri Lanka’s mass protests, which the authority claims amounts to 6.5 million rupees.

Minister of Aviation and Shipping Nimal Siripala De Silva told the media recently that the SLPA has to pay for the alleged damage.

De Silva said that structures such as walls, shops and benches  in the vicinity have been damaged as a result of the months-long protest campaign. Before the authorised vendors resume operations in the area, the port will have to renovate the damages caused, he said.

Sri Lanka’s protests that were centered around Galle Face Green have come to an end with protestors having vacated the agitation site.

An Official from SLPA told EconomyNext that Galle Face is managed by the port and the entire area is owned by the SLPA, apart from the Gota Go Gama site and its vicinity which is owned by the Urban Development Authority (UDA).

Minister of Urban Development and Housing Prasanna Ranatunga said in early August that damages caused to Galle Face Green area due the anti-government protests there must be financially borne by the protestors. (Colombo/Sep16/2022)
