Sri Lanka police arrest five more in connection with May 09 violence

ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka police have arrested five more suspects in connection with a government-backed attack on two protest sites in Colombo and the murder of an MP in Nittambuwa on March 09, police said.

Police spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa said, so far, three people from Moratuwa have been arrested for the May 09 attack on anti-government protestors in Colombo that sparked a wave of violence around the country resulting in nine deaths including two police officers and injuring nearly 300.

According to police, more than 230 have been arrested so far over mob violence that occurred island-wide from May 09 to May 11 following the attack on protestors by supporters of ex-Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Thalduwa further said that the Attorney General has not ordered the arrest of 22 people including MPs Johnston Fernando, Sanath Nishantha, Sanjeewa Edirimanna & Senior DIG of Western Province Deshabandu Thennakoon.

“The Attorney General ordered to summon these people and get their statements and take necessary actions with the evidence,” said Thalduwa.

Along with the 230-plus that were arrested for the mob attacks, he said, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), which is investigating the murder of government MP Amarakeerthi Athukorala in Nittambuwa after a clash with an angry mob, has arrested two more regarding the incident.

Thalduwa said, investigations are still continuing and evidence is being collected by both the Police Department and the CID. (Colombo/ May 17/2022)
